Low Tech , No CAD Board Design

Tools: Pencil , Square , Measuring Tape, 1"x8' Drafting Batten , and some heavy construction paper . All available at Lowes .

Set Length and navigation points at wide point , 12 inches from end of nose and tail . Bend batten to intersect all points and draw a curve .Use the edge of the paper as your stringer.

Make a half template , you can just flip it over for symmetrical sides.

Trace out both sides and give her a cut out. Cheap easy was to start developing your eye for curves and own templates / designs. Zog

Evening Surfriders , Another awesome January day[almost 70 and sunny] and surf session. I totally freaked out and surfed from 1 to 6 and now can't use my arms or shoulders . Happy New Year Surfriders , She's done. From raw blank to finished board , The Short Bus Superstar is back at the house . Feels pretty bringing the first board I 've ever designed , shaped, and painted home . A big thanx to Dimitri Talbert for his shaping cave and advise , and Jimmy Keith for the killer glass job and pinline. As before no CAD design , CNC machining , went old school with planer , shading blocks , tons of measuring and tried to to get her as symmetrical as possible with my old blurry eyes. Season Greeting Surfriders , Here's a glimpse of my newest project , The Short Bus Superstar . Probably should have taken a few pix earlier , but not much interested in talking about it , wanna shape. Started with Marko 7'4" EPS Halibut blank a carving a 5 something performance planing hull. I'm getting ready to start the tail and finish her out in the pix. She is done and has gone to the glasser. No CAD template, CNC cutting, or fancy tools , trying to develop the eye and learn the art and skills of shaping. Should be able to show you the finished product soon. Merry X-Mas , Zog

The 3 class rejects took their tattoos and stupid looking , failed surfboard designs to a secret sandbar to avoid heckling and rock throwing from the status qoe . Surfed super fun chest to head first jetty , with Melissa , Bret Barley and some other pro [ they were ripping backside aerial 360's ] . No one around , a couple of guys paddled out at end of session. Most everything is closed , finally saw a couple kiters & windsurfers as Canadian Hole parking lot has been empty. Only took this picture before paddling out this afternoon , thinking I would get some shots with the Go Pro . Ducked dived first wave of set , as next one hammered me so fucking hard it completely sheared camera off its mount and made me say my prayers. Good thing for the little leash , as kept camera undamaged { except for tab } . 2 sessions of a life time , solid 6 foot swell , 10 foot plus faces with double overhead monster tubes. Office Observations and Lessons in Physics

Evening Surfriders , People always ask me about stuff I see as a Paramedic , they think we always go to crazy car wrecks . The truth is , as I do work in Wilmington I do respond to a bunch of accidents { Wilmington is the most dangerous place to drive in N.C.}, most are pretty routine with few serious injuries . Yesterday I responded to this tractor trailer vs. pick up truck over by the battleship , the driver was in critical condition and the extreme forces displaced through the pick up were impressive. The driver of the pick up made a unfortunate decision and pulled out to make a left turn and was struck in the driver door by the tractor trailer coming down the bridge toward the battleship .There was no impact to the passenger side of the vehicle in the picture , this was damage from the force of the impact to the driver door as it tore the bed off the frame . There was 3 feet of intrusion into the driver compartment as it tore the seat of its mounts and drove him through the center console , ***but his seat belt did not fail and kept him from being ejected*** . I was first on scene , we had a 6 minute on scene time as we only had to perform minimal cutting as he was displaced into the passenger seat and hanging partially out the door . We had a 7 minute transport time to New Hanover Regional Medical Center , in which patient received all the bells and whistles ,{ 2 large bore IV's, intubation , and ALS trauma protocol . My coworkers are awesome , we can flat out make some shit happen in 13 minutes. The patient was alive this morning in ICU , severe internal injures . It goes back to those early days , " look both ways when crossing the street " and wear your seat belt . Tomorrow is not guaranteed , take your time and arrive alive . , Zog

Hola Surfriders, A little added bonus to a super fun day. Got 3rd. place in 12'6" Elite { there's nothing elite about my paddling skill , as I slogged down the beach on my 11'2" Hobie ATR } . 10 miles in 2 hr. 16 min. 46 sec , with my paddle buddy Boogie pushing me the whole way. . Jason got me this as we were not able to hang out for after ceremony and party. This will something nice to remember what a good time Keith and I had , and that we helped get some special kids in the water . , Zoglodyte the Troglodyte , Surfer , Caveman , Paramedic and Reluctant Paddler. We Came , We Saw , We Raced , Part II. The Onslow Bay Challenge

What Up Surfriders , Keith {Boogie Nights} White and I ventured up to Topsail for The Onslow Bay Challenge and had a blast. First off let me say Jason , Phil and the SideArm family pulled off and awesome event with trucks and a bus to ferry the racers to the south end , and the best vibe with the coolest group of people we've done anything with in awhile. Both Keith and I agreed that there was none of this snotty , I'm the king of the Northend bullshit , just a bunch of fun loving Bad Asses who came to get down . Over 40 racers helped race money for Surfers Healing , as they and all the sponsors were awesome and the shwag and good times flowed. Boy Howdy is 10 miles a long way , but the fat kids finished the race in 2hr and 16 min and had a blast. Great to see Haywood , CHill , Brad H. , The Curry family , William P. and lots of great friends . Good ole CB needs to have a downwind race as that is a lot of fun!!! Keith and I wanted to thank Justin for the motivation and lighting a fire under us , Smug burns a hell of a lot hotter than aviation fuel . Have a Great Weekend , Zog

Onslow Bay Challenge

Just talked to Jason at SideArm , as he wanted to remind everybody about the Onslow Bay Challenge on June 18 th. There is a couple races with a 3 mile rec division and the 10 mile open ocean downwinder. With a little luck we might get some stiff southwest winds for a great event .Jason reassured me that even my fat old ass could finish the race running with the wind at my back ,while my scorched , dehydrated , lifeless body washes up on Atlantic Bch. , but hey it's for a good cause supporting Surfers Healing. The only person you have to out do is yourself so lets charge it , get the biggest board you can find and we'll get jacked up on Britts Donuts and race. I had got an incredible sense of satisfaction on finishing the Cold Stroke {my first race}in under an hour as I'm sue this will be something to remember. Anyone wanting to go for some training runs give me a call or leave note in the comment box. As usual pray for surf , this flat bullshit Sucks!!! Zog

Tried to get some pix of the birthday boy, but had a ton of lens fogging issue with water and air temp difference. Brad was late as he is still trying to adjust to the K & W { kanes & wheelchairs } cafeteria diet as they awarded his young buck frequent flyer card . Brad also struggled with getting his new Depends on under his wetsuit , as I assured him it would be custom form fitted as soon as it got wet, and the bubbleguts would calm down to . Evening Surfriders , Hope everybody caught some of the fun surf today . Pretty cool early as I as only one out for a few minutes until Brad paddled out and we had a great session , as Justin joined us soon there after. Everybody had a blast , I stayed out for 4 hours and still can't feel my arms. You Tube and Warner Bro's big brothered me on the cool soundtrack , but that's OK , I'm high on Charlie Sheen and there is punk rock playing in my head 24 /7. Some attitudes in the water this morning , and words exchanged . If your gonna dust off the ole' NSP and drive down I-40 for the first sesh of the year and paddle out on the peak were the local boys have been surfing all winter , while you were wrapped up in your snuggie keeping your ovaries warm , beware as you claim the peak as yours . Happened to be in the right place , at the right time this morning for once . Super hard WSW winds didn't produce much this week , but some knee to waist surf this morning and the wind went straight offshore while I was the only one standing there. You can see the clouds and cold front approaching in the video. After about 90 minutes it swung around out of the NE as fast as it went offshore earlier. Feeling pretty lucky as the month has been very windy . The water is feeling great no ice cream headaches , here comes spring . Zog

We Came , We Saw , We Raced and Chris Hill Wins Cold Stroke Classic !!!

Yo Surfriders ,

Drake and I wandered up to W.B. and tried our hand at SUP Racing , and had a blast . We took 11'2" Hobie ATR's and rung what we brung . Drake finished ahead of me by a couple hundred yards as old Drakey boy is fast . It was a crazy 1 hour sprint{ 3.5 mile lap of Harbor Island } , don't know where I finished in middle of pack and don't really care as working that hard and just finishing was rush . Local hero Chris Hill won the 14 elite division , as those guys are bad ass paddling 2 laps at 7 miles . Here's a pre race shot , shot from the starting line to my left as I was in the middle and the initial sprint was crazy . Even popped off an action shot during race . Thanks Drake it was awesome running our first race together and I had alot of fun. Will post our times after banquet tonight. Zog

Surfriders Performance Lab - Hypothermia Experiment - 1 -11 -2011

Lab Rats : Drake C. , Keith W. , Myself

Surf Break / Lab : Somewhere between Daniels Reef and Atlantic Tower

Experiment Time : 1:45 pm

Lab Conditions : Chest to Head , Air -35 Degrees , Water - 43 Degrees , Wind - 10 to 15 west / straight offshore .

Pre Experiment Nutrition - 1 regular size candy bar and 300 ml. water per lab rat.

Equipment - All lab rats rode some kind of shortboard , and wore their best wetsuits and all accessories . All lab rats glad to have a little post holiday belly fat .

All lab rats agree that you could reasonably perform / surf up to about and hour . The fumble factor is always high in full wetsuits , as all agreed it was greatly amplified by the freezing conditions . All lab rats crashed and " froze " much more often than surfing the same conditions in warmer temps . All lab rats agree that their toes , fingers or both hurt and throbbed during session . All lab rats agree that they had trouble with coordination and manual dexterity after the session , { I stayed out for 2 hours and had trouble walking out of water , and shivered heavily driving home} .

Experiment Conclusion : 3 out of 3 lab rats agree , it was cold as SHIT !!!!!!!

P. S . , But all lab rats caught some awesome surf , with hardly anyone out .

Another cold flat day , sitting here watching Chasing the Lotus , got me daydreaming about great surf trips gone by . Here's a shot from 1986 {25 Years ago } damn I'm getting old . This little nugget is on the inside at Rio Nexpa , before it was popular . Just a few palapas on the point and about a dozen people in the water at a time , as the surf was on for most of the day , every day. No digital photography , just good old Kodak film and a prayer . Seasons Greetings Surfriders ,

Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife Melissa ! We awoke to see yesterdays sneeker swell had gotten better and caught a great session with Brad for a couple hours before anyone else showed up. 40 degree air , and 47 degree water , with no wind made for a chilly morning . The first 3 pictures are Melissa's first wave as she paddled out and caught one of the best walls of the morning . As usual windows has made some updates to it's photo editor that I have get to figure out , so no digital enhancement , just cold , grey and just the way it was . The last shot is Luke pulling out of a closeout cylinder on our last set .Stay tuned as wind is offshore and I am heading back for more. Merry X-Mas, Zog

The conditions all came together this afternoon for some super fun surf, but boy howdy was it chilly. Ole' Sunskipper produced some super smooth stomach high surf with a max crowd of 4.

Weather is supposed to go down hill over the next few days and I thought I better catch a few with the sun out and the temp was a balmy 49 degrees. Stay warm and enjoy the weekend. Zog

Evening Surfriders ,I don't know about you other Go Pro owners , but I 've been wondering what kind of view I would get by turning the camera around .Sticking with CB surfrider protocol and that all research and development / testing should only be be done in the crappiest of surf, and that sure was easy today. I really didn't know what I would see with the camera having such a wide angle lens .The waves were really short and mushy , but I think it has potential . I like being able to see the other surfers and beach / background it gives the viewer perspective.Should get some cool shots in sunny overhead barrels , give it a try. Keep your fingers crossed for this weekend , and here comes the cold air. Zog

What Up Surfriders,

Yep , you guessed it , 5 th. day in a row of super fun offshore surf. Melissa and I were the only ones out at Motels this afternoon . Took out the Hobie ATR out for wind equalizer and had a blast . The best part was watching Melissa catch so many perfect waves as she was one out as I sat on the beach . Went to the Lighthouse earlier and saw some qualifying heats for this weekend US Surf Kayaking Championships .I tried to Bro Down with the owner of the vehicle above { homemade quad job , sound familiar } . I said " nice kayak " and was quickly informed that it was a waveski , and that he was the Kelly Slater of wavesking {i.e. the quiksilver sticker}. I threw a him shaka and a "right on " , and was able to contain my laughter as I strolled on to watch him blow up in another "explosive" heat. Lots of traveling surfers standing on the beach in disbelief as kayakers{ there's only about 20 of them } have a permit for the first jetty for the rest of the week . It's all about the enjoyment of riding waves and not the vehicle , so smile and enjoy your fellow surfsliders .Zog

Greeting from OBX ,lots of waves and wind . We surfed Frisco chest to head and offshore and reeling for 4 hours yesterday. So much fun surfing with Melissa on our 12 th. wedding anniversary. Hope you had a great weekend , as I did the" you call we haul "thing , but did catch a few waves . Here's one from this morning , it's for those of you complimenting me on my editing skills. Just 1 crappy wave before my battery died at 30 seconds plus. { note to self :charge camera and sleep before hitting good surf }. It was awesome to see such good surf as everyone surfed so well , Brad , Brian , Melissa, Sam , Dan C. { who I saw catch some 1 minute plus rides }, and Drake "King of the Nose " Courie . I wish I would have taken other camera out as there were so many good rides in such good surf . The surf really improved towards noon with some incredibly long rides to be had. Say a prayer for our fallen brother Curt , who rode his final wave yesterday in Surf City. I was working in Cape Fear Hospital ED yesterday when he arrived , as many of us were fighting back the tears , I could only hold onto the fact the he passed doing what so many of us have in common and love , chasing the ultimate wave . Watch out for your fellow surfers , and enjoy their stoke as much as yours. Zog

First of all Thanks to The Master Cylinder himself , Keith for the lift this morning as my truck is getting serviced for upcoming swell chasing . I'll have to admit I probably would have grabbed my PSH and headed north , but it was truly a blessing in disguise. Keith and I were the only 2 out for a cylinder fest and one of the funnest sessions I've ever had at the pipe.Waist to shoulder , straight offshore , incoming tide a too many perfect corners to count .This is one of the first shots found when I plugged in the Go Pro , with more to come. That's Sam Fanjoy riding my board during a 4 + hour surf session just south of Frisco pier 2 weeks ago. What's Up Surfriders ,
Hope everybody been gettin' their Earl on . Went to Oak Island yesterday and surfed Lockwood Folly Inlet , and it was a day to remember. Brad , Brian , Keith , Z, and myself caught some of funnest outside bombers ever. Here's a couple of the first shots I have had a chance to look at .Epic rights breaking off the outside channel markers. I hope someone caught some pix from the beach as the paddle cam is cool , but doesn't do the size and overall volume of Earls lines any justice . John {mullet master}, Chris Curry , Heywood Newkirk , and William Pope charged the left from the Holden Beach side and caught caught tons of heavy bombs , as we could see them charging several hundred yards down the line up. Had to work this morning , but surfed the pipe for an hour and a half and caught some screaming lines and looping shacks. Keep your eye on it , and be safe. Zog

Hope you didn't get caught looking at the online forecast this morning and put the old eyeball on it. Super fun outside SUP session with no one out but Brad , Scott and myself for couple hours. Swell riding was the call today , way outside just enjoying the glide. Today was the first time I've tried shooting video with the paddlecam , came out pretty cool . Need to turn to sound of as it screwed up groovy soundtrack I was putting to it. We'll have to see how the Earls movement and winds pan out, I hope everybody gets to catch a few bombs. Paddle Cam Test # 1

Howdy Surfriders,

You know it , another day of gutless dribble . Know its nothing new , but made a paddle cam by following John Ashleys " how to " instructions off his blog Standup Paddle Surfing . Made a few changes and mods to custom fit my stick and took it out for a test today. He' s right , you don't even know its there , see a wave coming just push the shutter button and surf . Pretty neat angles and reminds me how fat and ugly I am . Should be fun to pass around out in the line up and get a little perspective on everybody elses surfing style. Gonna try some video when we get some surf.Looks like ITCZ is starting to heat up so pray for Caine' swells . Zog

Zoe The Magnificent

Howdy Hot Friday Surfriders ,

As you can see , you didn't miss a whole lot this morning , small offshore and a few fun ones to be had . Zoe paddled out on his new 8' 6" PSH and totally pulled some trippy Criss Angel Mind Freak stuff on us . As the first shot shows Zoe smiling, staring straight into the camera and bent my whole universe / reality. In the second shot Zoe was battling with Stan for this little nugget when Zoe tranced him out , making Stan drop his arms , and stand there limp and slobbering as Zoe glided by{ I think Zoe levitated to}. In the third shot Zoe was preparing to crank another massive bottom turn when he held up his paddle and bent it mid shaft { I don't think it is one of those new PSH magic paddles either} and as it went back into its original shape Zoe proceeded to shralp down the line around the point. I tried to take more pix , but as you can see my world was spinning , as the universe was twisted. I told Zoe I was dizzy and confused and thought I should go home and stare at board volumes and paddle dimensions { how weird is that }when Zoe told me never mind that nonsense he would show me the future . He warned of the great SUP apocalypse , and before I could say when , Zoe shot a lightning bolt out his ass and knocked me off my board. As I came to the surface I saw the vision, tandem sit down air mattress surfing . THE END IS NEAR. Fear Zoe the Magnificent , he a trippy dude, Zog

Well if a picture says a thousand words , this one says alot about my first real impression of the new stick. This board wants to ride high and tight in the pocket , the steeper the better. Board has tons of down the line drive , is very loose and wants to haul ass , as the wave size starts to hit waist high . Still finding my paddling sweet spot , but caught lots of waves and had a blast . Thanks to Brian for taking the time to take a few pictures as he caught this one while swimming on the inside. What's Up Surfriders ,
Hope your staying cool , and just like you I'm dreaming of foreign lands and tasty waves . Here's a blast from the past , Blogmaster zipping through the inside at Rio Nexpa in central Mexico in September of 1988 . After a fun filled summer of lifeguarding in good old CB , went for 6 week south of the border surf bonanza with Dean Pye , Buddy Hicks , Mike Thomas and the Nelson Brothers . Nexpa was still relatively small with about 6 palapas on the point and no hotels . The surf pumped every day we were there and the average crowd never topped 20 , with so much room and so many perfect long peelers rolling down the point as the river mouth busted open while we were there . To anyone who has been there Lario was still running the point , this was before the feds killed him . I've been there a couple times , but not recently as I understand it has changed alot with surf tourism and development . Well so much for summer day dreaming , plan your next trip and pray for surf , Zog

Happy 4th. Surfriders ,
Here's a shot of new Paddlesurf Hawaii 9'6" Ripper . Custom deck pad by yours truly , took a day and killed a pair of scissors . Rode her this morning , waves were dumpy little closeouts , but board was very surfy . Paddles and floats well and stability is surprisingly good . Set her up with Future Controller quad set up which felt very smooth with tons of drive . More as I get her in some better surf. Now go blow your fingers off with some old fireworks. , Zog

Drake Comes to The Dark { Old } Side

Auchtung Surfriders ,

Much to the shock and dismay of longboarding fans worldwide , Drake Courie has quit longboarding , grabbed an SUP and started sweeping . Drake threw down his trusty Bing Levatator and evolved from a crawler to a stander overnight . Drake told Larry King be felt bad about his global domination of the logging world , and after suffering a critical birthday yesterday he thought it was time to be a man and learn to stand . As evidenced by these photo's the graying Courie was shown no respect as he was dropped in on by chicks and run over by his friends . After the session Drake went home changed his Depends and met the rest of the Geezers at K & W { kanes and wheelchairs} Cafeteria for some warm milk and bananas , and to bitch about shortboarders and speed bumps . The dark side is very happy to have this stylish soulglider, just keep your hands off my paddle ! Happy Belated Birthday Drake , and Congrats on all your recent Success . And how about Jeremy " Let's Just Try the Tip Time " Robinson getting on with the program this morning . Lots of stylish Toes on the Nose from Papa J , who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time this morning . Fun waves , and good friends add up for a great time !
